Here’s maybe the biggest hope for dog lovers in the near future.
When your aging dog can’t walk any more, watching him struggle rips your heart out.
When his final days approach and for a long time after, your pain is excruciating. And the loss stays with you day and night.
Now there’s good news for all of us dog lovers. What if he could have more time and enjoy a longer lifespan? Not just longer life, but better quality of life.
Now there’s a new drug which should be on the market for dogs soon. It’s currently being tested on dogs and other animals with promising results.
Zeus was a 12-year-old German Shepherd with terminal cancer. Treatment with the drug Telomir-1 resulted in total remission. Then there was a 12-year-old Newfoundland who couldn’t walk. He regained his ability to walk after being treated with the drug.

The company developing this new miracle drug for dogs and eventually (after more clinical trials) their human owners is Telomir Pharmaceuticals. They are following up on the Nobel prize winning work that led three researchers to get the Nobel Prize in 2009.
There are hard caps called telomeres at the ends of chromosomes. These telomeres protect the DNA strands from damage, like the plastic ends of shoelaces protect the lace from fraying. Their discovery showed that the shortening of the telomeres over time leads to many of the age-related diseases in dogs and humans.
What the company has developed is a small molecule that lengthens the telomeres. This prevents and even reverses many if not all age-related diseases.
Type 2 Diabetes, AMD. (Age-related macular degeneration), Alzheimer’s, osteoarthritis, Wilson’s disease, and Bird Flu are examples. The drug works on the root causes of these and many other diseases to improve overall health span and longevity.
In the case of diabetes, glucose levels and insulin sensitivity can return to pre-diabetic levels, preventing all the life-threatening complications that usually go with the disease.
Much of the progress in treating diabetes results from better regulation of iron metabolism. This prevents high iron levels and reduces oxidative stress.
Oxidative stress is caused by an imbalance of free radicals (long considered a major source of aging) and antioxidants. This oxidative stress damages important cell structures, like DNA, mitochondria, and proteins. It accelerates age-related diseases and additional shortening of the telomeres.
No date has been announced for its availability in treating dogs. The company estimates that in the 4th quarter of this year it will be ready for submission to the FDA.
Dogs lovers are keeping their fingers crossed.
